Eating In / Eating Out

Home-cooked black pepper udon for lunch on a cozy Sunday makes me smile

The many joys of eating at home, in short pants and tatty t-shirts, lounging like beached whales in front of the tv / computer are without doubt the most relaxing time of my day. I don’t have to care about prying eyes judging my every move, or whether my armpit hair is showing when i raise the spoon to my mouth, or sighing in dismay at that chilli sauce stains on my new cream coloured dress caused by me attacking the crabs over-enthusiastically… I can lick every single finger clean and nobody will even raise an eyebrow! ROFL

Pandan Chicken wrapped in star shapes for dinner is fantastic!

But sometimes, one does feel like a caged animal, cooped up at home the whole weekend… so there are times when we will dress up and go on dates! The best thing about eating out is people watching. There are really all sorts out there and everybody has their own quirky personalities. Yet, sadly in JB, there’s really nowhere to go (when u wanna do fancy and take the effort to dress up). I used to wonder why ppl wear cocktail dresses to movies at Jusco (a shopping mall similar to Cheras Leisure Mall in KL) until I faced a similar predicament. Dinner + movie @ Jusco… and we wanted to make it special (& cheap) LOL… so dress up I did. *desperate times call for desperate measures*

Nando’s lemon & herb chicken with grilled veggies & fries

Anyway, we ended up at Nando’s and they ran out of rice. So without even asking my opinion, they substituted it for fries instead. *sigh* i did make a bit of a fuss but i was hungry, so i shut up. when we were about to leave, i saw them serving rice! *urgh* Not that their rice is that fantastic, but i wanted a healthier option than fries that day. The chicken meat they use do taste pretty good paired with the peri-peri sauce… *double sigh* Plus entertainment of the night? A couple of guys who waited for their bill for almost 15 minutes! I saw them reminding the waiters a couple of times with frustrated looks on their faces. The service at that Nando’s can certainly improve.

Aoba Hokkaido Ramen @ Vivocity

The ramen was so-so. The egg though was nicely done with the yolks cooked just right, and the noodles were decently chewy. Cha siu was tasty but it didn’t melt in my mouth. The most disappointing thing was the shoyu soup base… salty and oily. I prefer the ramen shop at Central – Marutama Ramen, so much better. Prices were a bit on the high side too. Btw, the seats were so close together I could hear every word spoken at the next table… and no, I have no interest to hear about how good the ramen was in that shop at harajuku.

Talking about hearing everything being said by the ppl sitting next to u at a restaurant, me and hubby had this weird experience in KLCC’s Madam Kwan’s. A well-dressed lady seating beside me on my left kept on talking loudly (in Thai?) and she was the only one at her table. She would talk for a while, then stop as if listening to a reply, and then speak up again. So I thought, “Another one of those loud ones on the phone with a bluetooth earpiece”, shrugged and ignored it. However the people at the other table seating facing her kept on giving her curious stares. Even my hubby, sitting opposite me with a clear view of her, gave her a funny look. He told me that no, she wasn’t on the phone… *hmmmm* She settled her bill and left after she finished her meal without any fuss, except for the sporadic bursts of conversation directed at the chair opposite her. Was she seeing “something” we all can’t see?

so, this weekend should I eat in or eat out?

the food looks delicious! i can never tell the difference between good food and stuffs. as long it tastes good, i’m fine with it. though i would suggest eating out since well i’m all the way in brisbane with no access to mamak food which i crave so so much.

arent there lovely places to go to eat out? malaysia is such a wonderful place to eat nonsensical, unhealthy food..tastes so good yet so, so unhealthy at the same time. u know what i mean, right?

there are plenty of good makan places both in sg and jb, but we ate in this weekend… coz both of us eat out 5 days a week, so saturday and sunday we try to go a bit “healthier” :D
next week will be back in kl, and we’ll go wild! food always seem to taste better there somehow >.<

yea i understand ur mamak craving! during my ol' days in melbourne, the only "mamak" food was found at this place called chilli padi where they sell teh tarik for AUD3 in small miserable styrofoam containers… talk about depressing! and yeah, dining out then was a luxury too on a student's budget!
