When I think of home, I’ll somehow get round to thinking of Hau Kee’s food. The craving for it is like that of a caffeine addict deprived of his next dose of coffee…

I love my home in Cheras. Not just because I grew up there but also because of this place. Just a 5 minute drive down to the foothills and we’ll be in the lap of food heaven. It’s been a family fav for years – birthdays were celebrated there, reunions with old friends and even the dinner when my parents and my in-laws met for the first time was held at this place.

Hau Kee seafood restaurant started as a humble 1 shoplot operation and expanded now to include the surrounding shops in the row. On weekends, we tend to go early for dinner – as early as 6.30pm so we don’t have to brave the crowds and the crazy shortage of parking spaces… this is yulek, guys. “don’t play play” :D

Deep fried pork ribs with fruity sauce (Guo Jup Pai Kuat)

A staple we must order every time we’re here. I think my parents are quite sick of it since they eat here often enough, but I’ve not had it for a long time so it’s as delicious as ever. This is also DH’s favourite. We can’t seem to find this dish served anywhere else!

Braised homemade tofu with melon (Xing Gua Tau Fu)

This is another must-have. The smooth home-made tofu is amazing paired with the sauce.

Prawns cooked with salted egg (Ham Tan Har)

We skipped crab today and opted for prawns instead (btw their butter crab in claypot is the absolute best). With the prawns fresh and crisp, this dish tasted wonderful.

Another staple - steamed chicken in a bucket (Yat Tong Gai)

You can find this dish served in almost every table at the restaurant. It’s one of their most famous dishes. The chicken is tender and goes really well with the sauce that has a mild herbal flavour to it.

Spicy sotong on a hotplate

This was a new dish we tried – a compromise really, for mom and dad were complaining that we never try anything new! Not surprisingly, it was very good as well! The sotong was cooked just right and when paired with the sambal, kept me going for second and third helpings.

At the end of the meal, I was grinning from ear to ear, drunk with satisfaction and happy to return to my bread-filled existence in Singapore. I’m now looking forward to my next meal at this place, for my sis will be back home soon for a visit and she never misses a chance to have dinner there as well!
